In this record I found a flyer advertising Lang’s other records. Some of these can’t be real: A covers album, ‘Drag’, ‘All you can eat’ (with Chinese lettering), ‘Even cowgirls get the blues’ OST, ‘Absolute torch and twang’… Really? OK.
None of which takes away from this light as a feather confection of breezy pop which perfectly articulates the joy and fears of summer romance. I know, I know, we’re programmed to think something is wrong when we see three or more of the following list pop up in one review: smooth, pop-infused, chanteuse, bright, slick production, electronic bubbles, swelling strings, warm feeling of nostalgia without sounding retro, smooth-as-maple-syrup voice, bell-like tones, cushiony pop. Don’t look now, but they’re all in AllMusic’s review of this album. And they’re accurate (well, it sounds kinda retro to me).
You can run but you can’t hide from the joys of adult pop. Lang is the best in her field. When affluent young grown-ups with seaside abodes and lots of pillows in their homes fall in love, it feels something like this. I can’t imagine any other life than one in which I can vicariously experience these pleasures.
