The sound of this is just right: unhurried, expertly played, beautifully sung, naturalistically rendered classic country band performances. Sure, an objective critical listener might point out that in between the highlights, there are some simple, maybe too simple, songs. No hidden layers of meaning, no cynical or ironic overtones, no complex studies in human psychology. Just some naïve ditties about telling his kids how he went to jail, how he learnt to play guitar from his uncle, how happy he is to have a young girlfriend… But that’s what I like about it. And don’t forget, in between those ditties are definite great songs filled with meaning, with love, regret, hope. And no one sings those like Merle, not in 2000 they don’t.
