360 records from 2000: 99. Peter Green - Hot foot powder

99. Peter Green: Hot foot powder

Country: UK
Artist: Male solo artist
Career: recording since 1966
Language: English
Genre: Blues

Peter Green may have lost his mind in 1970, he’s still making better records than Lou Reed in 2000. This straight blues record, 13 Robert Johnson covers, may offer modest charms, but they’re charms alright. And modesty is underrated. I’ll go out on a limb and say that, of course there’s nothing like ‘Albatros’ here, but I like this record as much as Fleetwood Mac’s early blues efforts, which I also like quite a bit. There’s a little unique signature to the arrangement of each song (a Dr. John piano, percussive acoustic guitars, a slightly funky undertow…) that sets each song apart, and makes the record sound far more melodic and pop-oriented than your average blues workout. No endless solos either, but here and there you get flashes of that special Peter Green liquid lead guitar style. No world shaker, game changer of a record, but a lot to like.

At its best: I’m a steady rollin’ man, From four until late, They’re red hot, Preachin’ blues, Traveling riverside blues
