Sometimes I feel jazz is one of those mysterious black holes that appear on Siberian mountain sides. I'm fascinated by the surface, can't grasp the bottomless pit. Hancock only supplied the slimmest of framework to his band (the Hancock - Carter - Williams axis of Miles' 2nd quintet, Hubbard on cornet). They proceed with glee into the unknown. Plus 'Cantaloupe island'.
