Hey Hey we're listening to the Monkees... part 6

Side 2
1."For Pete's Sake" (2:10) (Joey Richards/Peter Tork)
2."Mr. Webster" (2:02) (Tommy Boyce/Bobby Hart)
3."Sunny Girlfriend" (2:31) (Michael Nesmith)
4."Zilch" (1:05) (Micky Dolenz/Davy Jones/Michael Nesmith/Peter Tork)
5."No Time" (2:09) (Hank Cicalo)
6."Early Morning Blues and Greens" (2:35) (Diane Hildebrand/Jack Keller)
7."Randy Scouse Git" (aka "Alternate Title") (2:35) (Micky Dolenz)

Again, the dreaded side two problem. You've got to admit the 'Sunny girlfriend / Zilch / No time' stretch is problematic. Maybe my problem with several Nesmith songs so far is that I quite like some of his solo albums and these songs are like early exercises, very alike but less good. 'Sunny girlfriend' is like that. 'Zilch' is twice as long as it should be. 'No time' just shouldn't have been on here. 'No energy' more like, the piano is simple again but sadly not charming this time.

But on either side of that are great tracks. 'For Pete's sake' and Mr Webster' is a neat one two trick at the beginning of the side (energetic first song followed by moody and slightly weird reverie). And like 'More of...' they end on a high. 'Early morning...', I love it. 'Randy scouse git' too, of course. Eccentric stuff.

They still haven't made that great album, but I like these guys. Not just for kids (though kids are preferable to most music critics).
