Hey Hey we're listening to the Monkees... part 2

Side 2
1."Last Train to Clarksville"
2."This Just Doesn't Seem to Be My Day"
3."Let's Dance On"
4."I'll Be True to You" (Goffin, Russ Titelman)
5."Sweet Young Thing" (Goffin, King, Nesmith)
6."Gonna Buy Me a Dog"

I've been reading the AllMusic review of this album, 'one of the great debut albums of all time'. I'm puzzled. It must be some other self-titled Monkees debut album than the one I'm listening to, cause this one is ok.

I do like side 2 a little better than side 1, in large part cause it's more varied and freeflowing. Two of the songs here are better than anything on side 1 ('Clarksville' and 'I'll be true to you', though I'm probably alone on that last one, it just has those nice backing vocals that get to me). 'Clarksville' is a classic. And I'm into 'This just doesn't seem to be my day' as well, if only it didn't sound like it's being sung by Tiny Tim's chipmunk.

'Sweet young thing' is, I understand, a favorite of Monkees lovers, but I don't hear it yet. I guess it rocks kinda, but the song doesn't develop in any sort of way, right? According to AllMusic it has a stunning solo, which managed to get past me without registering every time I played it. There's always later.

The other two aren't much at all - I liked 'Let's dance on' better when it was 'Twist and shout', and 'Gonna buy me a dog', well, there should be a law against being so young and peppy.

Overall, I played this a couple times more than side 1 - it's fun. But the LP as a whole still seems like a fairly nice mid-60s package, not much to set it apart. One of the great debuts of all time?
