Side 1.
1,"She" (Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart)
2."When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door)" (Carole Bayer Sager, Neil Sedaka)
3."Mary, Mary" (Michael Nesmith)
4."Hold On Girl" (Billy Carr, Jack Keller, Ben Raleigh)
5."Your Auntie Grizelda" (Diane Hildebrand, Jack Keller)
6."(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" (Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart )
On the basis of side one, this is shaping up to be a cool little record (that sold millions).
Things have improved on all fronts: better songs, more distinctive arrangements, better singing. The first three songs are some kind of homerun. After that you get the necessary fluff songs - 'Hold on girl' is still pretty nifty, the backings make the song; 'Grizelda' is, well, a lot of albums need that one weird song to keep it on track, so I'm down with it if it doesn't have 5 brothers on side 2. And a powerhouse to close off the first side.
This is a lot more like it, like a beat group version of a Lovin' Spoonful record.
Compared to AllMusic's überfan I'm still a skeptic. He feels even 'Grizelda' is a masterpiece! I don't hear any masterpieces yet, but what a fun record. I was a little worried after the first one, that this was going to turn into a disappointed putdown, but what a relief.
Can't wait for side 2.
