2006/01/10, Knitting factory, NY
Box elder
On january 10 Stephen played solo at the Knitting Factory (the YouTube clip offers no further identification, but I suppose that means New York) and he played this well received 'Box elder'.
The show was recorded, apparently, and here's the setlist:
1. Shoot the Singer
2. Church on White
3. We Dance
4. Box Elder
5. Ramp of Death
6. Frontwards
7. Witch Mountain Bridge
8. Freeze the Saints
9. Major LEagues
10. Vanessa From Queens
11. Gold Soundz
Maybe someday I'll hear it.

2006?

(PDX Pop Now – festival sampler)
A whispered message from an artist in hibernation.
In the normal scheme of things, 2006 would've been another year for Stephen and the Jicks to head for the studio – record the next album. But they didn't. Instead, publicly nothing much happened (played a few stray dates, including Bonnaroo where they did a version of 'Pennywhistle thunder' with John!) as Stephen perfected his new direction, crafting a carefully balanced record and practicing hard on making it all sound perfect. The the Jicks got a new drummer and they practiced all over again. This time he wasn't about to rush things. If it took time, he'd take the time.
Somewhere in that year he contributed to a festival compilation 'PDX Pop now'.
It would be generous to call these 90 seconds anything but a fragment: a bass loop, sinister backwards vocal sounds (not really words), and some creepy synths. Takes you right back to those 2000 synthesizer home recordings – this is probably stoned wizardry from Shamrock Justice studios (Stephen's basement). And I dig it.
Think about it, there's nothing like this dating from after 2006. There probably is, but it isn't released anymore.
End of an era (I'm running this theme in the ground).
Whatever happened to Shamrock Justice anyway?
