Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks: 116 - 2011

Flower children
Planetary motion

'Flower children', in this earliest incarnation I've heard, is heavy psychedelica, SF circa '68, reminds me of some evil Jefferson Airplane song (always the SF band that sounded most like a bad trip). All sorts of out of tune swirling tone clusters are hovering in the horizon as they drive through its wild soundscape. Pushing relentlessly, the songs speeds up and slows down (intentionally) – if you're familiar with the later version, this one's a lot tougher. There's little breathing space for the flower children here. Dense and claustrophobic.

And it's also great. It probably failed to make the record cause they decided on a sunny, upbeat, pop album. This acidic track would've been right out of place.

Among unreleased songs, a highlight – this early arrangement stands on its own.
